This Stonebwoy biography traces how Livingstone Etse Satekla, born March 5, 1988, spent over a decade turning Ashaiman street energy into one of Ghana's most decorated music careers. Known to fans as 1GAD and as the president of BHIM Nation, he has built a catalogue that blends dancehall, reggae and Afropop with Ewe, Ga and Twi lyricism, backed by a life story that runs through real tragedy, an independent label he built himself, and a return to the classroom decades into his career.

A Childhood Marked by Tragedy
As a young teenager, Stonebwoy survived a car accident on the Tema Motorway when a police vehicle collided with the car he was travelling in with his father and twin brother. His twin brother died in the crash. Stonebwoy suffered serious leg injuries and spent roughly four months recovering in hospital in Ghana. He has spoken openly about the accident in later interviews as a defining moment that shaped his resilience.
He attended Tema Methodist Day Senior High School, known as MEDASS, a school that also produced Sarkodie, Eno Barony and several other names in Ghanaian music, where he began performing under his stage name during school events.
From HighGrade Family to Burniton Music Group
Stonebwoy joined dancehall veteran Samini's HighGrade Family in 2008, gaining touring experience and studio grounding under an established mentor. In 2012, following the release of his debut album Grade 1, he left to found his own label, Burniton Music Group (BMG), which he still runs as CEO today.
The Albums That Built the Catalogue
Necessary Evil (2014) turned Stonebwoy into a household name and won him Artiste of the Year at the 2015 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, the same year he won the BET Award for Best International Act: Africa. Epistles of Mama (2017), a 24-track project, was dedicated to his mother, Catherine Satekla, who died on July 29, 2015, and it went on to be ranked among the world's top reggae albums that year. Anloga Junction (2020) leaned into his Volta heritage while pulling in collaborators like Keri Hilson and Nasty C, and 5th Dimension (2023), released through Def Jam Africa, pushed further into Afropop with features from Stormzy, Davido and Tiwa Savage.
What BHIM Actually Stands For
Stonebwoy's fanbase and personal brand are built around BHIM Nation. BHIM stands for "Bless His Imperial Majesty," a phrase he has described as an awakening call rather than a religious title. Through Burniton Music Group and BHIM Nation, he also runs the Livingstone Foundation, established in 2017, which works on education, healthcare, disability justice and youth empowerment, including borehole projects in communities affected by illegal mining and a skills-training initiative called the BHIM Workshop.
Back to School, Decades In
In 2024, Stonebwoy completed a Bachelor's degree in Public Administration at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA). He followed it with a Master's degree in International Relations and Diplomacy from the same institution, graduating in December 2025, a move he has framed as strengthening his role as a cultural ambassador for Ghana alongside his international bookings.
Those bookings extend well beyond music charts: his two Artiste of the Year wins are covered in full, including how the award's voting actually works, in our Telecel Ghana Music Awards guide, and his most recent international stage appearance is covered in our piece on his AFCON 2025 performance in Morocco. Closer to home, BHIM Nation's flagship Bhim Concert runs every December in Accra as part of the country's December events calendar.
