Boti is a twin waterfall at the bottom of 250 steps, and about thirty minutes' walk away there is a rock shaped like an umbrella that fifteen people can stand under. Both are within ninety minutes of Accra. Most people do them in the same morning and are back for dinner.

Where Boti Falls is

The falls sit in the Yilo Krobo district of the Eastern Region, about 17 km north-east of Koforidua, just over 30 minutes by road from there according to Touring Ghana, and roughly ninety minutes from Accra by road. The nearest settlement is Huhunya, and the falls are inside a small forest reserve run with the Ghana Tourism Authority.

The falls themselves

Boti is described locally as twin falls. A "male" and a "female" stream that run side by side and, in the wet season when the volume is high, meet at the base. That joining is the part the local tradition is built around, and it is also the part you will not see in March.

Which matters more than it sounds. In the dry months Boti is a trickle. People drive out in February, look at two thin streams down a rock face, and wonder what the fuss was. The falls are a wet-season attraction and should be planned as one.

The 250 steps

There is one way down and it is a concrete staircase of around 250 steps. Going down is easy. Coming back up in the middle of the day is a genuine climb, and it is the reason to start early rather than after lunch.

The steps get slippery in the rain, which is, awkwardly, exactly when the falls are worth seeing. Closed shoes with grip, and a hand on the rail.

The Umbrella Rock

About thirty minutes' walk from the falls, up through the bush, is a formation of two boulders stacked so that the upper one overhangs like a canopy. Fifteen or so people fit underneath it, and the view from the top out over the Krobo hills is the photograph everybody comes back with.

The path is steep and rocky in places. It is not technical, but it is not a stroll either. This is the section people underestimate. Take a guide; they are available at the site and they know which of the several paths is currently passable.

The three-headed palm

On the same circuit there is a palm tree that has split into three trunks from a single base: unusual enough to be a stop, brief enough that it is a photograph rather than an activity. Guides fold it into the Umbrella Rock walk.

How long it all takes

Allow two to three hours on site to do the falls, the Umbrella Rock and the palm properly, plus the drive. That makes it a comfortable day trip from Accra and an easy half day from Koforidua.

What it costs

Boti has historically been one of the cheaper sites in the country, and at times access to the falls area has carried no gate fee at all. Reports vary, and arrangements at the site have changed more than once.

Budget for a modest entrance charge, a guide fee for the Umbrella Rock walk, and parking. We are deliberately not printing a figure here that we cannot stand behind. Carry cash in small notes and expect to pay something at the gate. Checked August 2026.

Getting there

Driving

From Accra, take the road to Koforidua, then head north-east towards Huhunya and follow the signs for Boti Falls. Ninety minutes to two hours depending on where in Accra you start and how Nsawam behaves.

By public transport

Take a tro-tro to Koforidua from Accra, then a second vehicle or a dropping taxi out to the falls. It is straightforward on the way there and less so coming back. Vehicles from the falls thin out in the afternoon, so agree a return with a taxi driver rather than assuming one will be waiting.

Organised trips

Boti is one of the most commonly packaged day trips out of Accra, usually bundled with the Umbrella Rock and sometimes with Aburi or the Akaa Falls. If you do not have a car and do not want the two-vehicle return problem, this is the sensible way to do it.

When to go

The falls are at their best in the rains: broadly June to August, with a second wet spell in September and October. That is when the twin streams have volume and when the "meeting" happens.

Early in the day, for three reasons: the climb back up the steps is brutal in afternoon heat, the light in the gorge is better before midday, and the Umbrella Rock walk is more pleasant before the sun is overhead.

Before you go

  • Closed shoes with grip. This is the one non-negotiable on this list.
  • Cash in small notes for the gate, the guide and parking.
  • Water, more than you think: you are carrying it down 250 steps and back up.
  • A change of top if you plan to get near the base of the falls in the wet season.
  • Sun cover for the Umbrella Rock walk; the path is open in places.
  • Go with a guide for the Umbrella Rock. The falls you can manage alone.

What to pair it with

Boti works best as the second day of an Eastern Region weekend rather than a lone dash from Accra. Base yourself in Koforidua, do Aburi on the way up and Bunso Eco Park on the way back: the full route is in our Eastern Region weekend guide.
