Ghana YouTube monetization works through the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), and Ghana is on Google's list of countries where it is available. Getting monetised means meeting subscriber and watch time targets, passing a review of your channel, and setting up a payment route that works from a Ghanaian bank account. This guide covers the requirements, the Shorts route, the review, the payout method and the money that sits outside YouTube ads.
Quick Answer: Ghana is on YouTube's list of countries where the Partner Program is available. To earn ad revenue, a channel needs 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 public watch hours in 12 months or 10 million public Shorts views in 90 days. Google reviews applications in about a month and pays Ghanaian creators by wire transfer or cheque.
Is Ghana eligible for the YouTube Partner Program?
Yes, for the ad revenue tier. Google's YouTube Partner Program availability page lists Ghana among the African countries where creators can join, alongside Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Egypt and Uganda.
There is one catch worth knowing. Google runs a separate list for its expanded programme, the lower tier that opens fan funding at 500 subscribers. Ghana is not named on that list. So do not plan around memberships or Super Chat at 500 subscribers. Check the Earn page in your own YouTube Studio, which shows what your channel can actually use.
How to get monetized on YouTube: the Ghana YouTube monetization requirements
To share in ad revenue and YouTube Premium revenue, Google's YPP page asks for 1,000 subscribers and one of two things:
- Long-form route: 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months.
- Shorts route: 10 million qualified public Shorts views in the last 90 days.
You also need to follow the channel monetization policies, have no active Community Guidelines strikes, turn on 2-Step Verification for your Google Account, and link an active AdSense for YouTube account. The same page notes that monetization can be switched off for a channel with no uploads or Posts tab activity for six months or more.
YouTube Shorts monetization in Ghana
Shorts can get you to the ad revenue tier on their own, but the bar is high: 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. For most new channels the long-form route is the more realistic one. Watch hours from the Shorts feed do not count toward the 4,000 hour target, so a channel built only on Shorts cannot top up with them.
Used well, Shorts still help. They bring in subscribers, and subscribers are half of the 1,000 you need.
What counts as qualified watch time
Only public long-form videos count. Time spent on private, unlisted or deleted videos is excluded, and so are views of Shorts in the Shorts feed. That makes the 4,000 hours the hardest target for a solo editor, and it rewards a channel that makes fewer, better episodes people watch to the end.
How to apply in YouTube Studio
- Sign in and open YouTube Studio from your profile picture.
- Go to Earn in the left menu and select Apply now.
- Accept the base terms.
- Set up a new AdSense for YouTube account or link an existing active one.
Google says it replies with a decision once your channel is reviewed, typically in about a month, and that delays are possible when volumes are high.
YouTube monetization policy: why a channel gets turned down
Reaching the numbers does not guarantee approval. Reviewers check the channel against the monetization policies, so reused or re-uploaded footage, copyright problems and thin, repetitive content are the usual causes of a refusal. If you are turned down, fix the problem, keep publishing, and reapply when Studio allows it.
How AdSense pays creators in Ghana
YouTube does not pay into mobile money. Ad earnings come through Google AdSense, and Google's payment methods table lists wire transfer and cheque for Ghana. Electronic funds transfer is not offered. Add a bank account that accepts international wires in the Payments section of AdSense, and check your own account for the payment threshold.
Domestic money is a different channel. Brand sponsorships, consulting fees and fan support are usually settled in cedis through MTN MoMo or Telecel Cash, and a business wallet keeps that income easy to track.
The real cost of making videos in Ghana
Mobile data is the first expense. Research, uploads and cloud backups use many gigabytes a week, and the price comes straight out of your budget before a single view is monetised. Add power cuts and hardware, and a power bank, backup storage and a solar charger become production costs. Count them when you price a brand deal, so you do not undercharge a sponsor.
Lessons from Ghanaian creators
Wode Maya is the best known example. Yen reported that his channel reached two million subscribers, built on Pan-African stories about enterprise and diaspora returnees. What carries across to a small channel is clarity of purpose: one recognisable topic, published on a schedule, which is also what a sponsor can buy.
Building income beyond YouTube ads
Ad revenue alone rarely pays a production team. Our guides on how content creators make money in Ghana and creator monetization strategies in Africa cover the other routes, and the Ghana creator economy piece shows where they fit.
- Aim at diaspora viewers. Views from the UK, Europe and the US generally earn more than views from lower-paying regions.
- Build repeatable formats. A weekly series gives viewers a reason to return and watch to the end.
- Sell sponsored segments directly. Banks, property developers, tourism agencies and retailers pay in cedis.
- Use written contracts. Agree deliverables, revisions and payment dates before you film.
